About the Artist

Sarah Chapman anchors her practice in representational painting modified through the lenses of memory, imagination, and play. She finds inspiration in objects of curiosity and the imagined internal lives of non-human beings. Her work raises questions about the role of embodied joy and the intersection between one’s internal experience of identity and external social structures, systems, and current events.

Sarah is based out of NYC and Chester County, PA. She received a B.A. and J.D. from NYU, and was a lawyer and derivatives trader before becoming a professional artist. Sarah pursued her art education at the Art Students League of New York, where she trained in drawing, painting, and printmaking. Her artwork is frequently exhibited and is displayed in personal and corporate collections nationwide.

“Equally powerful in its ability to attune the viewer to their immediate surroundings is Sarah Chapman’s Eggcess. At once sculptural, performative, and relational, this work is billed as a hunt for 24kt gold-leafed eggs in the Big Apple. Impossible to ignore, this seemingly simple provocation invites the viewer to participate in the childhood game of hunting for eggs. Tantilizing the participant with finding the eggs ‘hidden in plain sight throughout Midtown Manhattan,’ the inclusion of gold incentivizes the hunt and creates exquisite visuals while layering the proceedings with the metaphor of the ‘golden egg.’ Signaling resurrection, the triumph over death, and the promise of eternal life in Christian mythology, the ‘hunt’ for these prises on city streets makes me think about what animates everyone else in the urban environment, who isn’t lucky enough to be searching for one of Chapman’s Eggcess eggs.”
